Today we have to analyze "The Storm," "The Rope," and "Epilogue" from Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. I am going to discuss about how Kevin's prolonged stay in the past affected him and how it affected his relationship with Dana.
After Kevin spent 5 years in the past, he has problems adjusting to 1976, he looks very older than he actually is. He has changed very much, he is kind of aggressive, plus he picked up a southern accent. he is been witness of very horrific things, like for example, seeing a slave woman being whipped to death when she was in labor of her baby, he was accused of helping slaves scape.
Kevin never saw slavery from Dana's prospective, this is because he didn't experienced as she did. He taught it would be fun to travel around the United States reviving the history of his country, but as he travels, he stars to see how things were back then, where slaves are treated like animals, seen that poor woman being whipped when she was having a baby.Even though Kevin's behavior is very aggressive, he is very dedicated not to hurt Dana when he touches her. I think these experiences helped him to understand how Dana's ancestors suffered in the slavery period. Now that he is back in his present he would learn to value and respect his even more.
I chose this picture because I think this is how Kevin would look after coming back from the past, kind of tired and sad.
