Much Ado about Nothing

May 21,2012

Today we are reading a new novel called Much Ado about Nothing by William Shakespeare. What I have  to do is to analyze two of the characters of this novel named: Claudio and Hero and explain whether they really love each other or not.

In my opinion, Claudio does not love Hero, he sees her as a perfect wife because her father has a good economic position and also because she is so pretty. The reason why I believe this, is because Claudio asked Don Pedro "Hath Leonato any son, my lord?" (act 1.1 234).  Claudio wanted to know if Leonato had a son, because he knew that if he gets married with Hero he would inherit everything, he believed they were a perfect for each other. If you really love a person you don't care whether you would get any benefit from your marriage, but maybe that is just the way they used to handled things during in the 16th century.

Another example that Claudio is not really in love with hero, is when he thought that Don Pedro wanted hero for himself and he responds " beauty is a witch against whose charms faith melteth into blood. This is an accident of hourly proof,Which I mistrusted not. Farewell, therefore, Hero"( act 2.1.150). he believes that don Pedro is in love with hero,so he decides to give up and let Don Pedro have her. If he was really in love with, he would have tried to talk to her or fight for her love, but he showed us that he is willing to do whatever Don Pedro desires.
